Frequently Asked Questions….

Who are we?

Inspiring Girls is an international charity, dedicated to raising the aspirations of young girls around the world by inspiring and empowering them to believe in their dreams. We do this by connecting them with female role models from diverse backgrounds - we want to show girls the limitless possibilities in their future careers, whilst breaking inherent gender and cultural stereotypes.

What does Inspiring Girls do and how?

Inspiring Girls connects girls with female Role Models from all walks of life. We do this through a carefully developed 6 month program with each month focusing on a different theme. These themes aim to help girls find their identity and build their confidence and self esteem through aged appropriate activities and affirmations. We connect the girls with amazing female Role Models who share their career journeys and experiences. These interactions take place online or face to face, through interactions at school or within the workplace.

What is a Role Model and why should I sign up to be one?

You don’t have to be a Nobel prize winner to be a role model, you just have to be YOU. With your unique story, career path and experience, you can help shape the mindsets of girls in schools whilst breaking inherent gender and cultural stereotypes. As a Role Model, you will be invited to meet the girls face to face in schools or online to talk about your career choices, experiences and how these have shaped you.

We think you will love being a Role Model as you fulfil your sense of social responsibility whilst rediscovering a passion for your own industry. You’ll also witness the impact you have on the future of each of these girls as you follow them through their journey on our program.

I have signed up as a Role Model, what are the next steps?

After you signed up you will have received a welcome newsletter from us introducing ourselves. Next you will receive an invitation to attend our induction training. These are run once per month online and we have a calendar of dates so you can pick the one that suits you best. Once you have completed the training you are ready to start joining the modules with the girls! Please note that the induction training is a requirement to be a part of the program.

How much time do I need to commit as a volunteer?

The program is split into 6 modules with one module per month - so the most you would commit is one hour per month. Of course you are welcome to participate in more modules and with different schools but Inspiring Girls is an opt-in approach - there is no minimum or maximum requirement so you can work it around your schedule.

How do I sign up for a module?

We will send out an email newsletter with all the information of the module including the date, time, location and any language requirements. All our modules are registered through Eventbrite -  the email invite will include a link where you can secure your spot - but be quick, spaces are on a first come first served basis! We will aim to send invites for modules around 6 weeks ahead of the module date to allow you to plan your schedule and send a reminder closer to the time in case your availability changes.

What do I need to prepare for each module?

When you sign up for a module, you will be sent a confirmation email with a link to preparation materials to help you. Each module differs and will depend on if the session is being run on or offline - you may need to prepare a short presentation in a format of your choice or bring print outs a long with you. All preparation work is kept to a minimum to make it as easy as possible for you so you can focus on engaging with the girls and have fun!

Do I have to commit to all modules?

No. You can simply register only for the sessions that work for your schedule - it’s an opt-in approach.

When do the modules usually take place? How long do the modules last?

There is one module per month per school and each module lasts approximately one hour.

Who will host the modules?

The host is there to facilitate a smooth rundown of the modules. The host can be Inspiring Girls staff or your fellow role models. We encourage new Role Models attend the modules first and when they have gained a better understanding of the modules they can then then begin hosting sessions. If you are interested in becoming a host, please contact us.

Is it possible to work with the girls on a one to one basis?

Yes - as you work with the girls, you may begin build relationships on a more individual basis. If you would like to available to work with girls one to one, you can let us know and we will add your profile to our library. This is will then be given to the girls so they can select the most appropriate role model and we will help to organise the contact you are comfortable with. Should a girl ask for you specifically, we just require consent from all parties - yourself, parents and teachers.

Do I have to work with the same school or can I volunteer for more than one?

You can work with as many schools as you wish - or if you prefer to stick to the same school that is fine too. You will receive invites to all modules with all schools (Language permitting) and you can choose as you go. If your month is looking a little busy and you need to skip few sessions, that’s fine too! Remember, it’s an opt-in approach and we’re grateful for whatever time you can volunteer!

I have signed up for a module but can no longer make it, what should I do?

We understand that schedules change! If you are no longer to make a session, please let us know ASAP either by emailing us directly, or cancelling your attendance via Eventbrite.

Am I given training as a Role Model and training to work with different age groups?

Yes you will attend your initial induction training and are free to join this as often as you wish - though it is only a requirement to attend once. We are working on developing a guide to help you with different age groups. Some of our modules already specify where there are aged appropriate activities and who they are aimed for.

I can’t speak Cantonese. Can I still become a Role Model?

Yes! We are after role models who can speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Our schools are both local and international so host in different languages. We will always specify the language requirement on the module invite.

I have started attending online modules, but some of the girls won’t turn on their camera in our Zoom session, what should I do?

Firstly, relax! Remember that these are young girls who are figuring out who they are and have low self esteem and confidence. Use ways to break the ice and engage with them - learn their names so you can ask them questions directly and try to make it fun for them! Once the girls build trust with you they are more likely to turn on their cameras and engage further.

Are there any other ways I can support Inspiring Girls?

Yes! There are lots of ways you can be involved. We are always looking for donors, sponsors and corporate partners to work with. We also have an After program where we give the girls on-site experiences through internships, site visits, work experience - if these are opportunities you or your workplace are able to provide, please contact us.

You can participate through Inspiring Girls Video Hub and Job Shadowing Vlog series; both require you to film a (series of) video(s). Please reach out to us if you’re interested!
